Downloading Your Own Recordings As Ringtones, Possible?

When you are looking for a new ringtone, whet do you look for? I have a few friends that have really interesting ring tones. One has a baby laughing, and one of them has a cow bellowing.so, I see that it is possible to have just about any sound you like made into a ring tone. I wonder, can you record your own sounds, or voice, then make it into Ringtones? I have never seen anyone do that, but I think it would be very interesting. I also like the music, but not as well as the unique ones. They are more common as far as I can tell at this point.
