How to Test Aquarium Rocks

By admin | April 4, 2010

Not all types of rocks are safe for aquarium use. However, if you really want to use aquarium rocks as ornaments, be sure to test them first. Here are some easy ways to get this task done:You can check for calcium content with the use of vinegar. Calcium increases the hardness of aquarium water. Allow a small amount of vinegar to drip onto the rock and see if bubbles appear. If it does, then it contains calcium and may not be used in your aquarium. You may also use muriatic acid for this test.If you have an aquarium test kit, you can also draw a sufficient amount of sample water from your aquarium and check the water’s pH level and hardness. Soak the rock in it for a week and do the test one more time. If your kit measures a change, then it’s best to keep the rock out of your tank.
